If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
It's a great poem for sure, but I think it's a little too general: suitable for those who think they just need a bit of a tidy up all over. It doesn't serve the needs of those people who have decided to concentrate on just one thing which they feel really needs their attention.
Fortunately, for one group of New Year's resolvers at least, I found a poem which does exactly that.
So, for all those people whose New Year resolution was to lose some weight, I present to you --
DIETERATA
Go casually amid the health and fitness freaks,
and remember what peace there may be in lying down.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all joggers.
Carry your weight quietly and neatly,
and listen to others,
even the Weightwatchers;
they too have their mueslis.
Avoid loud and aggressive dieters,
for they are vexatious to the binge eater.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter,
for always there will be sleeker or faster persons than yourself.
Enjoy your telly as well as your banana lounge.
Keep interested in your own figure, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing silhouettes of time.
Exercise little caution at your business engagements,
for the world is full of free lunches.
But let this not blind you to what fibres there are.
Many persons strive for high cheekbones,
And everywhere life is full of aerobics.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign vegetarianism.
Neither be cynical about bean sprouts,
for in the face of all junk foods,
they are as digestible as grass.
Take kindly the counsel of your scales,
surrendering gracefully the jeans of youth.
Nurture strength of humour to shield you from sudden split seams.
But do not distress yourself with yoghurts;
many pig-outs are born of doughnut vans and bright pizza shops.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be generous to yourself.
You are a child of the one-size universe
no less than the 8's and 10's;
you have a right to be here.
And, whether or not your skin is clear,
No doubt your cellulite problem is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with your fridge,
whatever capacity it may be.
And whatever your cravings and appetites,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep filling your stomach.
With all its spas, gymnasiums and cholesterol themes,
it is still an eater's world.
Be careful. Strive to be fed.
Happy New Year!
